Born to Run: The Unseen Photos by Eric Meola
By Lynn Hilditch LRPS It has been over thirty years since Bruce Springsteen's album Born to Run was released in 1975. Now a new book of previously unseen photographs taken during the album photo shoot has just been published. Born to Run: The Unseen Photos (published by Insight Editions, October 2006) is a collection of 100 black and white photographs selected from more than 700 images that the American photographer Eric Meola took during that shoot. The collection also includes the classic cover shot which has been described as "iconic" by Rolling Stone magazine.
These previously unpublished photographs show a young Springsteen complete with
beard, leather jacket, torn vest and guitar on the verge of becoming one of the greatest American rock performers of all time. The book highlights a turning point in his early career when this album put him on both the covers of Time and Newsweek and inspired critics to proclaim that the baton of American troubadour had been passed from Dylan (the American poet) to Springsteen (the American storyteller).
Eric Meola captures an exciting moment in the history of American rock. With an
introduction by popular music writer Daniel Wolff and all the lyrics from the album by
Bruce Springsteen, these stunning photographs tell a tale of a young singer/songwriter from Freehold, New Jersey on the brink of becoming a rock legend. Born to Run: The Unseen Photos provides a timeless snapshot of 1970s Americana.
Eric Meola is a self taught photographer whose photographs have been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC and the George Eastman House. He has photographed three Time covers, and his work has appeared in Esquire, Life, Travel and Leisure and other prestigious magazines.
